Topsoil vs sandy loam for Central Texas lawns and beds
Topsoil and sandy loam are not interchangeable guarantees. Compare texture, screening and intended use for lawn preparation, leveling and planting before ordering soil.

The quick answer
Topsoil describes a soil product; sandy loam describes its texture. Our screened topsoil is a workable natural planting layer, while sandy loam and lawn-prep loam are listed separately for lawn preparation and leveling. Screening reduces larger pieces but does not guarantee fertility, drainage or a precise laboratory composition. Confirm the current grade rather than assuming all brown soil is the same.
For new sod and lawn repair
Match the soil to the existing ground, planned root zone and turf installer's requirements. Compare sandy loam lawn prep, screened loam and screened topsoil on their product pages. Finished elevations and drainage matter as much as texture. Do not bury slab edges, siding, plant crowns or drainage openings, and do not use planting soil as structural fill.
For vegetable beds and landscape planting
A screened topsoil is not automatically a garden blend. Compare the listed garden soil blend and any compost amendment with the planting plan. Review source composition and obtain a soil test when fertility, salts or plant health matter. More compost is not always better and does not replace a drainage plan.
Estimate soil by its own density
Measure each area and the installer's planned depth. Convert feet and inches to cubic yards, then use the chosen soil's current planning density rather than a gravel density. Moisture changes actual weight and handling. Allowance for settling or uneven ground needs site-specific confirmation; current minimums and material prices are shown below.
Delivery and safe stockpiling
Choose a clean stockpile area and keep planting soil separate from base and structural fill. Avoid working saturated soil or compacting future root zones. Share your covered town, ZIP, exact address and access notes. Freight and sales tax are separate; longer hauls require a confirmed quote. Dispatch confirms availability, truck access and the requested date.
