Growing notes
Abelia blooms over a long season and attracts pollinators. In Central Texas it performs best with some afternoon shade and steady water during its first summer.
Preparing the bed for abelia
Central Texas ground is often heavy clay or thin soil over limestone. Mix a garden soil blend into clay or thin soil so roots can spread and water drains. Top the finished bed with 2–3 inches of mulch, kept a few inches off the stems, to hold moisture through summer.
