Patio pavers: base, sand and installation guide
Concrete and stone pavers make durable patios and walkways. Most failures come from the base, not the pavers.

- About 4–6 in compacted road base for patios
- Bedding
- About 1 in concrete sand, screeded flat
- Joints
- Fine sand or polymeric joint sand
Base layers
Dig out to allow for base, bedding sand and paver thickness. Compact the soil, add road base in 2-inch lifts and compact each lift. Driveways need a deeper base than patios.
Bedding and joints
Screed about an inch of concrete sand, lay pavers, add edge restraint, then sweep sand into the joints and compact.
