Topsoil for new lawns in Georgetown: how much to order and when
Much of Georgetown has only a few inches of soil over limestone. That makes new sod hard to keep alive through a Texas summer without a proper soil layer.
How deep to go
For new sod, 4–6 inches of screened topsoil gives roots room to reach water. For leveling low spots in an existing lawn, spread no more than about half an inch at a time so the grass can grow through.
Timing
Spring and early fall are the easiest seasons to establish grass. Schedule delivery a day or two before your sod arrives so you can spread and rake the soil first.
How to work out how many tons you need
Multiply length × width in feet by depth in inches, then divide by 324 to get cubic yards. Most gravel, base and sand weigh roughly 1.3–1.5 tons per cubic yard; soil and mulch are lighter.
